IT'S TRUE, MARY HAS MOVED TO TOWN...

I was a bit skeptical when I read my friend, Tom's post about a new Hamburger Mary's opening in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. All of the others are located in much larger cities or areas with much larger gay populations. You can find Hamburger Mary's in places like San Fransisco, Palm Springs and West Hollywood. But to my surprise, it's true! Mary has moved in to Iowa.

Andrew and I were heading to Home Depot last weekend and decided to check out the location that was advertised on the website to see if there actually was a building under construction. Much to our surprise, there was a building. It even had a "Hamburger Mary's" sign on it, AND it was open! Huh? The first I'd heard of it was on Tom's blog. We'd seen no advertising leading up to it's opening.

We'll definitely check it out and give it a try. Having never eaten at a Hamburger Mary's, I don't really know what the menu is like. If it's good I'll support it. But, I must say, if it's not, the fact that it's a gay owned and markets to the LGBT community probably won't be enough for me to go back. Although, for those reasons, I do hope it is good and does well.

If any of you have been there before, give me a heads-up on what you think about it.

Daryl and I went last Friday night. You might want to wait a while to go as they need to get the bugs worked out in the service department. Slow is not the word. I have never had such a bad waitress. I think it must have been her first night, so I’ll give her a break. The table next to us didn’t get their food until we were leaving and she never came back to our table to ask us if we wanted another drink or if everything was ok. We finally just got up and headed for the door to pay. We would have had another drink and stayed a while longer.

Ok. On the positive side: I thought the food was good and cheap. It just a regular bar menu, simple food that you would get at any local pub here in town. We had two drinks and food and it only came to came to $24. I guess you can’t beat that.

We will be back. In fact I think we are going with some friends in a couple of weeks. If you haven’t been there by then, I’ll give you a call. It’s a positive for CR. I’m glad they are here and I think it will be a nice place for people to hang out and eat, drink and be Mary, of course!

There used to be a Hamburger Mary's here in Seattle (on Capitol Hill - duh), and it was pretty good. Decent food, okay service. Gone now - there isn't one in Seattle anymore that I know of. I think it was the location - it's been a few things since HM's left. I think right now it's a drag leather bar. *shudder*

We have a Mary's in Palm Springs and its pretty good. They do vary from city to city. There was a VERY popular one in San Diego for many years, until the owners gave up the license and just renamed it. The one in Palm Springs isn't as cozy as the one in San Diego used to be, but the food is good. Great burgers, I like the meaty mushroom burger best!

Hey, Scott! Frazier and I have been to the one in San Francisco and the one in Dallas. The food is very good, not outstanding, but more than delicious enough to bring you back. The one in Dallas had a kitschy atmosphere that made it a fun place to go. Congratulations!

My friends and I had some damn tasty burgers there. The place was pretty empty when we were there (Sunday night, bad weather). Service was decent. The manager said their grand opening is this weekend, and it sounds like they have some entertainment and activities planned. Things with cute names, like "Maryoke." (There's a small stage in one corner.) I hope it makes it.

Hamburger Mary's is great. I've been to the ones in Palm Springs, San Francisco and Ft. Lauderdale. They all vary, but they're all very gay. The scene is usually as good as the food. My favorite burger is the one with the sauteed onions. Yum.

There used to be one in San Jose when we lived there,it was great because alot of the staff were wanna be divas, once you cracked their harsh exterior they were all sweethearts. We were actually regulars to the one in SJ, they had a affordable sunday brunch that our Gang would go to once or twice a month. They learned quickly to just leave the Champagne on the table !!! :)
